Koettavaa/tekemistä - What to do in Antalya?

Tässä postauksessa esittelemme joitain "must" juttuja mitä Turkissa/Antalyassa ollessa kannattaa tehdä.

Turkkilainen aamiainen

Yksi asia, mikä täytyy Turkissa ollessa kokea on turkkilainen aamiainen! Se on meidän mielestä todella iso osa turkkilaista kulttuuria ja siinä tulee esiin kuinka turkkilaiset tykkäävät syödä yhdessä, jopa monen tunnin ajan. Aamiaisella ruuan esillepano on tärkeää.

Antalyan keskustan alueella on monia "normi"ravintoloitakin joista aamiaisen saa tilattua, mutta kunnollisen kokemuksen halutessa kannattaa suunnata pois kaupungin hälystä. Yksi paikka, missä kävimme oli Çakırlar - Pazar Kahvaltısı. Muita samankaltaisia vaihtoehtoja toki on ja joihinkin pääsee jopa pienemmillä paikallisbusseilla. Kannattaa kuitenkin ottaa selvää reitistä ja kysyä paikasta esim. hotellilta ennen kuin päättää syrjäseuduille lähteä.

Laivaretket

Aktur Park

Hah! Ei tullut paljon otettua kuvia täällä..
Aktur Park on huvipuisto ostoskeskus Migrosia vastapäätä, mistä kerroimme aiemmassa postauksessa. Lapsien viihtyvyys on täällä kyllä taattu!

Linkin takana on muutamia kuvia, joissa näkyy puiston laitteita. Puistossa oli laitteita joka ikäiselle, joten vaikka aiemmin sanoimme tämän olevan esim. lapsiperheille oiva kohde, myös nuoriso löytää varmasti täältä itselleen viihdykettä päivän ajaksi! :-) Terveisin me 22-vuotiaat, viihdyimme erinomaisesti. :-D

Hamam

Suositeltavaa on tarkistaa netistä hamam-kylpylöiden arvosteluita. :-)

Antalya Kaleici Balikpazari Hamamin sijainti. (Google Maps).

In this post we will tell you some ”must” things what you should experience while travelling to Turkey/Antalya.

Turkish breakfast

From Çakırlar - Pazar Kahvaltısı :-)
One thing you really should try in Turkey is turkish breakfast! In our opinion, it is a really big part of Turkish culture and it shows how much Turkish people enjoy eating together with their friends and family (even for many hours). Even though Turkish breakfast is quite healthy and light, it wont leave you hungry and will keep you satisfied for a long time. Normally the breakfast includes i.g. bread, different kinds of thick cheeses (soft, hard… etc. you can also put some jam on it :-P), olives, honey, nuts, vegetables (mainly cucumber, pepper and tomatoes), omelettes, Turkish sausages and of course, Turkish tea!! :-P

In Antalya area, there are many “normal” restaurants where you can get Turkish breakfast but if you want a real experience, you should go away from city hustle. One place where we went was called Çakırlar - Pazar Kahvaltısı. Of course there are other similar options and you can go different places even with a local bus, but you definitely should do some good research beforehand. Usually there are some cute, wooden cottages in the trees and in general, very peaceful atmosphere. When we are travelling, it is really important to experience something really typical for the country’s culture and like we said, Turkish breakfast is definitely part of Turkish culture.

Boat trips

When arriving to harbor, even when you are local you can’t miss the call of the boat trip organizers, haha. There are different kind of boat trips and for some of them, there might be lunch included. The boats also look amazing! :-D We went for couple boat trip and in another situation when there were lot of us (exchange students) we rented the boat just for us. The boat trips are amazing especially when you want to sunbath on the boat without any worries and swim in a spectacular, turquoise sea!

When negotiating about the boat trip’s price, you should definitely think couple things while booking. In the beginning, the prices of the trips can be pretty “expensive” so you should always negotiate a bit! We usually got a pretty good discount (10 to 20 turkish lira), even though they were asking more.  Once we booked the boat for us only so maybe that affected a bit, but still, worth of trying!

When the boat trip organizers are showing the map where the boat is going, stopping and stuff, you should ask pretty specific information. During the boat trips the boat will stop at least once for a swimming pause, but in some cases the routes and photos are a liiittle bit too good to be true, haha. Even though this isn’t a big invest, use your common sense while booking!

Of course one of the main things is to check the forecast beforehand. When it’s not burning hot weather it is of course good idea to take a boat trip, but we were preferring warmer days.

Aktur Park

Aktur Park is opposite of shopping mall Migros. We bet that every reader has been in an amusement park some time so we assume that you know the purpose of them in this world. Aktur Park is a smallish amusement park in Konyaalti and it is very suitable for families with children. We bet that children will enjoy their time here! When weather is not suitable for beach day this is a really good place for spend couple hours. There is no entrance fee in Aktur Park.

We went to Aktur Park couple times and the obvious devices were there (Ferris wheel,  Ghost train (which was a huge disappointment, btw) etc..). Click the link and you will see couple photos where you can see, how the park looks like. There are devices for babies, toddlers, teenagers and adults. So even though we said that the park is for families with children, it is really suitable for everyone. Greetings for us 22 yo girls, who spend half day there. :-D

Hamam

Ah, so lovely hamam!! Hamam is a perfect experience in the end of the holiday, especially if you have been walking in the city for all day long and you want to relax. If you go to have a beach in holiday in Turkey, it is really recommendable to go to hamam before active sunbath. They are scrubbing and washing your “old” skin out in hamam so after it, your skin is like made for sunbathing. ;-)

So, hamam is a Turkish bath where you will have your own massager and washer. You are not “chilling” there like finnish people are in spas, but you have to do what will be next, if we can say so. :-D The basic idea of hamam is that first, you will go to sauna (men and women separately), after that the washer will put soap and then scrub you and in some cases you might also get your hair washed. We went to hamam only once when we had our trip to Cappadocia and we got some face masks and fruit smoothies when we were in sauna. We had our bikinis on all the time, but we assume that in “real” hamam” you will be naked with only a towel on you. Anyways, we bet that you haven’t feel yourself so clean what you will feel after hamam! The price is at its lowest app. 20 €, but there are also different kinds of “packages”. So if you want a “better” hamam experience, you have to pay more (of course :-D). We recommend to check the reviews before going.

This was our last post about Antalya! We really hope that you have had some inspiration and help from our blog, even though you are not planning to travel to Antalya any time soon. During 10 months, Antalya gave us a LOT and we created amazing memories in a spectacular milieu and we also got many new, lovely friends there. We definitely recommend to go and explore Antalya instead of i.g. Alanya especially if you want to see also something else than purely touristic places. Comments and some new ideas are still very welcomed and if you have anything to ask – bring it on! <3

Meidän lempparinähtävyyksiä - Our favourite sightseeing places

Tähän postaukseen olisi totta kai voinut  vielä lisätä muitakin paikkoja, mutta emme tosiaan kaikkia Antalyan nähtävyyksiä ala esittelemään ihan senkään takia, että teillä lukijoillakin säilyisi vielä kiinnostus blogiimme, haha. :-D

Kellotorni

Kellotorni itsessään on näkemisen arvoinen kohde.

Hadrianuksen portti

Hadrianuksen portti on toinen sisäänpääsypaikka Kaleiçin sydämeen.

MiniCity

MiniCity on ulkoilmamuseo Konyaaltılla.

In this post we will introduce you our totally fave sightseeing places in Antalya-area! In addition to these places what we will mention, there is also i.g. Antalya Aquarium, which is one of the biggest aquarium in the world. It is located in Konyaaltı, next to Migros Shopping Center. We didn’t visit there but our friends did, and their opinion was that they wanted more value for money. We are not quite sure how much the entrance was, but it was ten to twenty euros, at least. But, if you are interested in aquariums and stuff like that, you definitely should visit there!
We could have put more sightseeing places to this post also but we think that it is better to keep this as compact as possible. Also we think that it could have been a biiiit too long and maybe boring also. AND we were also thinking your interest towards our blog, haha. :-D We didn't put the maps to this english part of the post, but if you are hesitating where i.g. Clock Tower is on the map, you can see it from the beginning. :-)

Clock tower

Clock tower during night light (sorry for bad photo).
Clock tower itself is worth of seeing. It is really memorable, and when you see it for the first time, you probably want to look for its history straight away. Like we told in earlier post, it is king of a sign which leads the traveller to the old town and harbor. Clock tower is a perfect meeting place, so the locals and travelers are both using it as that. You can’t confuse it to another clock tower or anything, because it is the only one there. :-D The clock tower is a really beautiful sight in a twilight, so you should definitely go and see it also at night time. Nearby clock tower there are also some benches where you can sit around and enjoy the city’s bustle.

So, clock tower is a historical place but also like we said, it has kept its import also nowadays as a meeting place. It is also a pretty good place to take selfies with the clock tower on the back, haha. :-D It is really easy to go see another sightseeing places because its location - it is middle of everything! For that reason we have put its location almost every map what we have in this blog. :-)

Hadrian’s gate

Hadrian’s gate is the another entrance into Kaleiçi! We spent the first half year of our exchange period for finding the famous gate and for us, it was more a myth than a real sight. Honestly, the gate isn’t that hard to reach but for some, weird reason it was for us and for our exchange student friends!? :-D You can just imagine our joy when we FINALLY found the gate!

Unfortunately, we can’t say a lot about gate’s history but on the other hand, our blog isn’t about history. Anyways, the Hadrian’s gate is one of the most important sightseeing places in Antalya and if you want to find some information about it, you can find it easily from internet. You can always take selfies in front of Hadrian’s gate and after all, it is in a pretty simple place. (you can check it from the map on above in Finnish part). Hopefully you will find it faster and with less effort than us! :-P

Düden waterfalls

Düden waterfalls are located near Lara, after TerraCity mall when going from the city center (exact location on the map above in Finnish part of the text). Local buses are going frequently i.g. from MarkAntalya to Lara, but the name “Düden waterfalls” wasn’t always in the bus signs. For example, nearby MarkAntalya the buses called LF09 and LF10 are going there. In any case, it is always a good idea to tell bus drivers that you are going to Düden waterfalls or in a Turkish way, Düden Şelalesi. The friendliest bus drivers will let you know when to jump off from the bus! If you will jump off in the main road, you have to walk through a little park towards to the waterfalls.

The whole area of Düden is really beautiful place to spend some time and of course, to take some cool pictures. There is a park where is usually some local Turkish families spending their days outdoor and couples enjoying picnic, parents and childrens playing football and stuff. Anyways, the myth tells that there is always a rainbow in the waterfalls. We visited there several time and once, unfortunately there wasn’t any rainbow. So, if you are reaaally lucky, hopefully you will have the chance to take a photo of beautiful rainbow in waterfalls. ;-)

Mini City

Mini City is an outdoor museum in Konyaaltı. Museum is a park where are miniatures of Turkey’s most popular sightseeing places, museums or other important buildings. The outdoor museum is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. The entrance was something like 5 turkish lira from 10 turkish lira (app. 3e). It will not make a huge hole to your wallet, hah. In the front of the miniatures there are some kind of speakers, where you can listen the story of the place. You can listen it in Turkish, English, German or in Russian. The park is suitable for the families but probably more to the youngsters and adults and especially for them, who are interested in to see every sightseeing places is Turkey at once!
Here were our favourite sightseeing places in Antalya, hopefully you will have some inspiration of this post also, even though this wasn’t that long post! Next post will be our last one and there we will tell you ome special Turkish things, which you should definitely try in Antalya!

Vanha kaupunki - Kaleiçi - Old Town

Antalyan vanha kaupunki, Kaleiçi (kuten me kutsuimme sitä turkkilaisittain) on jättänyt meihin ehdottomasti suurimman jälkensä.

:-) Totta kai kannattaa kysellä mahdollisilta vastaantulijoilta reittiohjeita, mutta me itse (perinteiseen) suomalaiseen tyyliin yritimme itsenäisesti selvitä Kaleiçin alueelta pois. :-D

Yhtenä vinkkinä viereisestä kuvasta: Kannattaa olla varovainen portaissa, jotka johtavat ns. ylös Kaleiçille, mistä löytyy mm. suosittu pubikuja. Portaat ovat erittäin liukkaat!

Kellotorni!
Miten Kaleiçille sitten edes pääsee? Antalyan keskustassa on paljon opaskylttejä, joita seuraamalla pääsee Kaleiçin ns. "oviaukolle" ja itsessään Kaleiçin löytäminen on todella helppoa. Itse kävelimme yleensä keskustan läpi (eli sieltä, missä Mark Antalya sijaitsee) suoraan tälle aukiolle, jossa tunnusmerkkinä on Antalyan tunnettu nähtävyys, kellotorni, josta enemmän seuraavassa postauksessa.

Hissi laskeutuu suoraan alas satamaan. Jos hissiä ei kuitenkaan löydy, yksi hyvä keino on kysyä apua paikallisilta, koska ystävälliseen tapaan he kyllä tykkäävät auttaa.

Kartalla matka kellotornilta maisemahissille! Klikkaa kartta suuremmaksi. / The route from clock tower to the elevator in the map. Click the map and it'll be bigger! (Google Maps.)

Basaari & Satama

Sataman Amfiteatteri
Me itse vietimme monesti alkuiltaa amphiteatterilla ystäviemme ja muutaman oluen kera ennen siirtymistä Kaleiçin pubeihin.

Alkoholia Turkissa on laillista myydä marketeissa kello 22 saakka.

Hıdırlık torni

Hıdırlık torni on Karaalioglu puiston ja Kaleiçin "välissä". :-D Meillä oli tämänkin paikan löytäminen hirmu vaikeaa aika ajoittain, joten emme oikein osaa kunnolla selittää, miten tänne löytää. Kartta kuitenkin havainnollistaa melko hyvin, missä päin torni on.

Klikkaa kuvaa suuremmaksi. (Google Maps).

Karaalioglu puisto

Karaalioglu puisto on vierailemisen arvoinen kohde jälleen kerran maisemiensa takia.

Tässä tulikin nyt jo muutama Kaleiçin/Kaleiçilla olevista nähtävyyksistä, joten onkin luonnollista esitellä seuraavassa postauksessa muitakin Antalyan nähtävyyksiä. :-) Seuraavaan kertaan, tamam Görüşürüz!

Antalya’s Old Town, Kaleiçi, (like we call it, in a turkish way ;-)) has a huge place in our hearts! Tiny, atmospheric alleys in twilight, Turkish music and Turkish language on the backround – so wonderful Antalya! We have spent many evenings in Kaleiçi and got to know many new, lovely friends there! There is also a gorgeous, quite big bazaar where you can find for example some cute souvenirs. Amphitheater, Hadrian’s gate (which we will presentate in next post), the harbor itself… So much to see and visit!

Lovely, lovely alley in Kaleiçi
We are not going to dig deeper Kaleiçi’s history, but we want to introduce the places which are the most important for us and we also want to give some tips, what to do and where. Anyways, couple things are worth of mentioning so here they are! At first we recommend to explore Kaleiçi on different days and different times of the day – it’s atmosphere changes according to the movements of the sun! During the day time families and couples are exploring the Kaleiçi area, whereas after sunset the youngsters and friend groups are coming to Kaleiçi’s alleys and pubs to enjoy the night. Pay attention to the fact that in Kaleiçi there isn’t (or wasn’t) any ATM’s, so if you want to use cash, you should withdraw it beforehand.

Another notable thing is that the lovely alleys at Kaleiçi are pretty labyrintish! We were lost couple times in there also. :-D People from Antalya knows exactly where each alley leads, but for us foreigners it wasn’t that simple. There are also some guide signs on the way, but prepare yourself for that fact that getting away from Kaleiçi can take some time. Of course you could (and you should!) ask some directions from passersby, but the traditional finnish way is not to ask any directions from anyone, haha.

So how to get to Kaleiçi at all? There is a lot of guide signs in Antalya’s center and if you follow them carefully, you will reach Kaleiçi’s “doorway”. It is pretty easy to find Kaleiçi after all. We usually walked there through city center (where’s MarkAntalya) straight to the “doorway”, where is the clock tower as a landmark. There is a road going downwards next to the clock tower and you can walk through the bazaar straight to the harbor. This is one of the easiest route there.

If you don’t want to be exposed to the temptations of shopping, there is also another route to the harbor. When you are coming from the city center you will not continue down to the bazaar, but you will turn right. You will walk app. 500m and soon there will be an elevator in the left side of the road. The elevator will go straight down to the harbor. If you can not find the elevator, again one good way is to ask help from locals because in a friendly, Turkish way, they like to help!

Bazaar & Harbor

You can sense the marvelous, Turkish atmosphere when you enter the Kaleiçi’s bazaar. Colorful carpets, affordable “brand”clothes and the smell of Turkish çay is tempting the traveler straight away to the bazaar. Kaleiçi’s bazaar is an awesome place and it doesn’t matter where in Turkey you are travelling, you have to visit at least one bazaar.

The "doorway" to the Bazaar
Like we told earlier, you can easily access to harbor if you walk through the bazaar. Also Mermerli’s beach is here. In harbor, it is pleasant to walk around and enjoy the views, sit in the amphitheater with some soft drinks, buy something small to eat from little markets or sit in the pub nearby and chit chat with the pub’s owner. If you start to feel very hungry there are several restaurants, but if you are pretty strict with your money you should remember that the harbor is an actual tourist center, which you can see from the prices of the meals. So if you want to have cheaper meals, you should definitely walk out from the tourist zone.

We spent a lot time at the amphitheater with our friends and couple beers before moving to Kaleiçi’s pubs. Especially during the season, the amphitheater was crowded and full of local youngsters with guitars there. They were singing familiar Turkish songs and some of them were even dancing there! It really created a lovely atmosphere to the harbor’s dusk.

From the harbour you find big stairs which lead to popular pub street. Our favourite pubs at Kaleiçi were The Goblin Bar, Filika Café & Bar and Tudors Pub & Arena. Also we got familiar with the shot bar Tektekci. :-D Kaleiçi’s alleys were full of small pubs and bars, (Footloose, Roadhouse) but our unconditional favourite was The Goblin Bar.

The small markets in Kaleiçi were open really late, especially during the season. It is legal to sell alcohol until 22 o’clock.

Hıdırlık tower

Hıdırlık tower is between Karaalioglu park and Kaleiçi. For us, finding this place was a little bit difficult so we are not 100 % sure how to get there. Anyways, the map is showing pretty clearly where the tower is. The Hıdırlık tower is next to Mediterranean coast and the views are pretty spectacular! Also you can have really cool selfies there. ;-)

Amazing view from the tower!!

During the evening, the lights of roads next to the coast are looking really beautiful and you can forget the fact that time exists, just by watching that view. Couple friends, beers, these views -  çok güzel!!

It is natural to continue the way from Hıdırlık tower to Karaalioglu park, which is super green and full of beautiful plants. After a Kaleiçi tour it is pretty nice to change the landscape, sit down to the park and just breathe while enjoying the sun.

The route between clock tower and Hidirlik tower, click the map and it will be bigger! (Google Maps.)

Karaalioglu park

Colorful stairs at Karaalioglu park

Karaalioglu park is definitely worth of visiting, again because of its landscapes. The truth is that Antalya honestly has several, really gorgeous landscapes! The park is kinda big and a really good place for stop by. It is a really suitable place for walking around and, well, just for the same things what you normally do in the park. :-D Karaalioglu park is a little bit cooler place because of the sea breeze, so it is definitely a good place to relax for example after walking around at Kaleiçi!

We walked through the park several times but we didn’t spent any actual time there. Around the park there are also several cute little terraces and one thing what we definitely recommend to drink in these places is the Turkish tea, çay. :-P

Here were couple attractions from Kaleiçi (or nearby Kaleiçi), so it is natural for us to introduce other Antalya’s attractions in a next post! See you next time, tamam Görüşürüz!
